Is God Time!
Abstract
There is a tradition (hadith) in the compilations of
prophetic traditions which says: “Allah says: Do not vilify time for
Allah is time.” This tradition occurs in five versions, all narrated by
Hazrat Abu Huraira (r.a.). First and fourth versions clearly deny any
identification between God and time. The second and the third
version can be interpreted in both ways. Whereas the last version
which is stated above very clearly identifies Allah with time. The
word ad-dahr (meaning time) occurs just at two places in the Qurān
at 45:24 and 76:1. This study argues that there is not even a slightest
justification for taking ad-dahr to mean Allah at any of these places.
It further argues that identification of God with time explicitly
contradicts with Qurān so the above mentioned version of the said
tradition cannot be a saying of the Prophet (P.B.U.H).
