The Importance of Motivating and Intimidating in Calling towards Allah

Abstract
Al-targhib (motivation) refers to all means of motivating the invitee to respond positively, accept the Truth, and exercise steadfastness upon it; whereas al-tarhib (intimidation) refers to all means of frightening and warning him of the consequences of rejecting the Truth, or not being steadfast on the Truth after accepting it. The importance of this method can be derived clearly from the fact that it is one of the most important objectives of the Qur’an. The Quran achieves this by reminding people of their Sustainer and of the benefits (of steadfastness on the Truth) in this world and the next, alongside warning them of what may bring them misery and undesired consequences. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم also used this method as the most important mean of da‘wah ever since Allah charged him with the propagation of Islam. Likewise, all previous Prophets used the same method for calling towards Islam. The method is in harmony with human nature because humans are attracted to things which they hope would benefit them sooner or later. Moreover, this methodology corresponds to the basic principle of gradation in calling towards Allah. Furthermore, the combination of motivation and intimidation, i.e. the combination of hope and fear, is the utmost quality of the slaves of Allah. Accordingly, Allah the Almighty has made fear of His punishment and hope for His Mercy two causes that enable hearts to benefit from the exhortation, and accept the guidance of the Qur’an.
