Abstract
Lahor is regarded as one of the oldest town in the present day Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The old name of the town is Slatora. It is situated at a strategic location on the bank of river Indus. It remained a centre of cultural activities and educational institutions. Panini, the famous grammarian of Sanskrit language was born here. Lahor was a seat of learning during the Buddhist period. Many archeological sites in the town have been excavated which speak of the historical importance of the town. However, an extensive survey is still needed to further carry out a planned excavation of the specific mounds here of the town. The importance of Lahor has been recorded by a number of historians in their writings. However, with the emergence of the Lahor (in the present day Punjab) its location and geography has always been confused by the scholars. The present article aims at to find out the real location of the town and to specify the exact location and historical importance of the town. It would be discussed in the article that due to the strategic location of Lahor it remained the capital of Hindu Shahi rulers. During Ghaznavid period, Malik Ayaz, a minister of Mahmud Ghaznavi reconstructed it.
