Abstract
During 70s and 80s, Pakistani society underwent great social
and political changes. The martial law imposed by Gen Zia ul
Haq and the execution of the popular leader Zulfiqar Ali
Bhutto caused great upheavals in the society. This chaos and
unrest coupled with the duress of the martial law gave birth to
resistance movement in Urdu literature, especially in Ghazal.
The Ghazal of 80s seems shrouded with symbols to reflect
resistance under the coercion of martial law. The poets of this
era invented new symbols which hold a galaxy of new
meanings and significance in Ghazal. In this paper, the
researcher explores and discuss in details the trend of
resistance in Ghazal of 80s and the new symbols employed by
poets to demonstrate resistance.
