Abstract
When an artist encompasses the representative intellectual tendencies in his
creations, he, in fact, reflects the episteme and determining the reality of present
age. So the progressive writers maintained their uniqueness in a way that they
adhered to their particular era and expressed the zeitgeist.
Progressive writers strengthened the tradition of portraying the inner self
boldly. Hence they brought literature close to the concrete facts. Among the
pioneer and representative progressive novelists, Sajjad Zaheer, Ismatchughtai,
krishanchander are very prominent. These novelists observed the material life
very closely and revealed its inner feelings. They selected and touched such
sensitive themes of human life which were prohibited earlier.
They dreamt of the humanitarian society free from class conflict, gender
discrimination, social exploitation, cultural chaos, sense of slavery and colonial
tyranny. To establish a society based upon equality envisaged by the communist
manifesto was their common subject. Progressive writers seem to represent their
age by reflecting the contemporary consciousness.
