Abstract
The present article examines the linguistic sensibility of Hali and
evaluates the influence of various languages on his poetry. Hali displayed
his own literary style and a unique language. While avoiding to follow in
the footsteps of his predecessors, he evolved a new poetic language in the
backdrop of his reformation drive. Evidently, one can see the influence of
eastern languages like Arabic, Persian and Hindi as well as that of English
in his poetry. Resultantly, a new, simple and lucid language got
formulated. Hali enhances the effectiveness of his simple and smooth
language with the use of artiatic devices like metaphors and allegories.
More importantly, his allegorical manner of narration is supplemented
with the use of idioms and proverbs. In the present article, an overview of
the aforementioned technical aspects of Hali's poetry is followed by a more
focussed study of the use of idioms and proverbs. The article shows that the
use of artistic devices of metaphor, allusion and allegory have been made
more effective by the addition of idioms and proverbs.
