Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khaliq (may Allah have mercy on him) was born in Bajaur,
Guwahati, around 5 AD. Then he settled in the village of Katkot in Bajaur, so he became
known as Gawati Maulvi Sahib and Katkot Maulvi Sahib. His surname is Abu Abdullah and
his lineage goes back to the famous Sufi saint Saleh Muhammad alias Deewana Baba.
His father Syed Amir bin Hussamuddin was a student of Maulana Abdul Haq Gopali and a
leading religious scholar of his time. Besides his father, Maulana Abdul Khaliq read early
books from Maulana Naseer-ud-Din alias Marcho Mullah Bajaur, Daman Mullah Hazara,
Hussain Jan Mullah Nangarhar, Sodai Mullah Bajaur and Mandgai Mullah Bajaur. Al-Islam
Maroof became associated with Maulvi Abdul Rabb Madrasa. He graduated from Maulana
Abdul Ali Dehlavi, a student of Maulana Muhammad Qasim Nanotavi, and Maulana
Muhammad Shafi on the occasion of the 5th AH, and returned to his homeland to teach in his
area.
He swore allegiance to Akhundzada Najamuddin alias Hade Ustad Caliph Payenda
Muhammad and later became his Majoon in both Qadri and Naqshbandi dynasties. He also
took an active part in the struggle for independence and jihad against the British.
In addition to Ghaniyat al-Qari Sharh Sahih Al-Bukhari, Tareeq al-Saluk al-Malik al-Muluk,
Al-Issam al-Sarim, Hashiyah Sharh Chaghmoni, Hashiyah Badi 'al-Mizan and Hashiyah
Hamdullah are some of his famous works.
