It is very difficult to understand the route that the city of Lahore took to go
through its evolutionary process due to lack of evidence. To understand it, we
have to consider the region as well, so the scope of the research has been
expanded to include Punjab.
Rig-Veda, the oldest religious text of the world, was compiled in Punjab in
1500 to 800 BC. In the text of this book the word Sapta-Sindhvah is used to define
the region more or less comprising of modern east and west Punjab. All the rivers
of Punjab have settlements and cities on their banks and an important one is on the
bank of Iravati i.e. Lahore.
This was a city of importance long before the arrival of Muslims and had a
tradition of arts and crafts since ancient times. In the absence of any concrete
evidence about the foundation of the city, two sources are employed,
archaeological findings and stories, traditions and mythologies associated to this
city, to chalk out the route of its evolution. In the present research both methods
are employed to reconnoitre.
