It is an acquired characteristic of bd ur-Ramān Chughtā’i (1897-1975)1 that he has the prowess to assimilate purist ideas to his pluralistic form - a feature that he imbues in the illustrations of his album, mal-i Chughtā’i (rel. 1968)2 - which illustrates the verses of llāma Muammad Iqbāl (1877- 1938), that are deeply anchored in Islamic Logos. One of the factors employed by the artist to achieve this end is by incorporating his work with an element of surprise, the theatrics of which unfold as the viewer interacts with his imagery insightfully. This paper is one of the series of papers that attempts to interpret Chughtā’i’s imagery of the mal, and concerns with rediscovering an old concept that the artist has innovatively conceived in his painting, Man and Satan from the mal, so as to interpret the illustration and explore the idea.
